On the outset if you see monthly salaries when seafarers are onboard the salaries do look very attractive.
However there are many considerations to be taken into account for considering the merchant navy salaries are actually on the higher side.
The considerations mentioned below cover the most points:
- Not Paid round the year: May be 95% of the merchant navy officers and crew are paid only when they are onboard. We have a saying in the merchant navy that More days more money when your reliever gets delayed. So if you take longer vacations, you are depleting your earnings.
- Seafarers tend to spend a lot more when they are on leave: As they are back from the ship, they tend to spend more on family as that the time they are with their families. Also with friends and relatives, there is an expectation that you will spend when you are there around.
- Seafarers generally are bad investors: It is not very true with the younger generation as they have a very short outlook on merchant navy as a career however seafarers always will be in demand and hence they feel they can invest less or take very high risk investments.
